Another exciting day in the mission. We left early to go to Snowflake to get a food order for Dion and Verbena. Also, I had a dentist appointment with Scott Stapley, my relative. I just had my teeth cleaned. We got a prescription filled for Robert, got a few groceries and were home about 2:00. Robert got the Elders to help him deliver the food order, and they took 2 cases of water and 2 cases of soda over to Myrna to help with the memorial dinner. Then we visited a few people, came home and fixed dinner for the Elders.
The TV said there was a severe thunderstorm centered at Cibecue (that’s the first time we’ve ever heard this town mentioned on the Phoenix news) and that there could be nickel-size hail. So about 7:00 it started to rain buckets, with thunder and lightning all around us. We could hear water running down the mountainside beside the church and also in the creek across the street. The Elders came in about 7:15 and we ate dinner. They had asked me earlier if we could take dinner to Murphy, but they couldn’t take it over there until after 8:00 when the rain finally stopped. At 8:30 they said their goodbyes and left for Show Low, only to return about 10 minutes later. Both roads out of town were blocked by mud and flood waters, so the Elders spent another night with us. Just after they returned Dion and Verbena came. They said they came to check on us and make sure we were all right. They are so sweet. We told them about our experience with Isaac and Verbena said there’s a rumor around town that Isaac and his brother are suspected in a rape that happened a few nights ago. Nice neighbors.
While Robert was getting the food order he talked to Ken Brown about our experience yesterday. Ken said we should let the mission president know what happened, especially since the Elders were involved. Robert called Pres. Craig, but he was busy so he just left a message for him to call us back. In the midst of all the excitement over the flood, President called. Robert talked to him and said his reaction was indifferent, at best. What did we expect? He never said a word about our safety, but did compliment Robert on his good judgment at not turning in the police report the Elders filled out, apparently genuinely happy that whatever happens to us won’t involve the Elders.
Despite the rumors, I don't live here anymore
