We cleaned this morning…finally! We haven’t cleaned this place for almost a month, and it gets dirty fast.
Tonight is Homemaking Meeting, so we’ve been taking a lot of invitations around town. After the pizza one, some sisters complained, rightfully so, about the men and children who came to our meeting. So we all decided we need to make Homemaking meeting just for Young Women, 12 and older, and the women. Everywhere we’ve gone we’ve tried to tell people that. When we were at Cheryl’s the other day we told her, because Ricky and Naysha and the baby have been coming. She said that was too bad because Naysha really likes to come, but we said, we know, but that’s the rule from now on.
So this morning Naysha calls. She says she’ll be home alone tonight and Aunty can’t come unless she goes with her. Why do we always feel like Cheryl backs us into a corner? I told her she could come because I didn’t know what else to do. I should have said, oh, too bad, Aunty won’t be able to come, but I didn’t. Apparently learning patience with Cheryl is supposed to be one of our big lessons out here.
Betty Lee called this afternoon. Her daughter died on Monday. We went over for a while and visited with her. She was very sad. Betty usually shows absolutely no emotion about anything, so when she started to cry it just made our hearts ache. Robert gave her a blessing. This daughter was in a wheelchair because of an accident she had several years ago, but Betty said she died from drinking…cirrhosis and kidney failure. The funeral will be here on August 4. The wake is in Whiteriver, so we probably won’t go to that.
On Monday before our incident we visited with Bettina at the Health Center. She has asked Robert to do another training with their staff on August 10.
Something we forgot about last Monday that was very funny. When the shouting started, Cue was sitting on our porch. As soon as Isaac started over here, Cue climbed the fence and started running. Last we saw of him he was hustling across the street into the bushes as fast as his little legs could go. We didn’t see him again for two days. I told the Elders I thought he was a coward, but they said this coming from the woman who locked herself inside the trailer wasn’t very credible.
Another thing we forgot was that Tuesday right in the middle of that big storm someone knocked on our door. We couldn’t believe anyone would be out during such a heavy rain and all that thunder and lightning. It was a guy who lives just down the street and he asked about an AA group. Robert told him we would love to start one if there are people who are interested. He gave the guy an ARP manual and the guy said he’d come back next Tuesday and see if he could bring some friends with him. We’ll see what happens.
There have been lots of big clouds today but no more rain. It’s actually been pretty cool for a change.
We had 21 women come to Homemaking Meeting. Sis Wilcock demonstrated making cinnamon rolls and each lady there was able to take home a little pan of rolls. They loved it. Sis Wilcock got them involved better than I’ve ever seen them and they actually talked and laughed. It was a good evening and I found two families that have children who need to be baptized. However, we lost the battle about the children coming. We must have had 15 kids show up. We told served the cinnamon rolls to the women first and so some of the kids didn’t get any, but we just said, sorry, this is a meeting for the women.
Despite the rumors, I don't live here anymore
