May 23, 2007

We look forward to Wednesdays with great anticipation because this day gets out of control so fast. Cleaning the trailer is the one part we have control over, but whether or not any piano students show up or who comes to scouts and when they arrive is all pure conjecture.

Today the only piano student we had was Alma, and that’s because we picked her up. But she has real potential. We put up a sign in the church that there will be no lessons during June and July and we’ll start again in August. That’s because when we looked at our calendar we realized the only Wednesday we’ll be available for lessons is July 25. To try and reschedule another day would be a nightmare. Also, the kids are out of school until July 19. That means we’d have to pick everybody up and bring them here and that would be another nightmare. So we just cancelled until school starts again.

After we took Alma home she called and asked if we had any spaghetti because they don’t have any food in the house for dinner. We had a little and a half-used bottle of spaghetti sauce, so Robert took that to them. On the way over he saw Juliet Collatata standing in a crowd of women near a police car. The policeman had one man handcuffed and several others standing off to the side. Rumor is there had been a fight involving several men and the police were called to intervene. Hopefully her husband, Byron, was not involved. Alma said there was a big fight up by Gilbert’s mother’s house on Graduation night, too.

Scouts were scheduled to go swimming again. Robert told people he’d start picking up the boys at 5:30, so at 4:30 here comes Casper. We weren’t sure if he came for a reading lesson, or dinner, or both. At any rate, we gave him both and by 5:00 we had two more boys here. We gave one of them some pizza, also, but the other one never came in the trailer.

Robert finally decided to load the boys in the van and start picking up kids. They took 10 boys swimming, plus Ricky. Fernando drove the van and Robert drove the truck. On the way home he filled both vehicle with gas, which cost about $75. I’m having a little trouble with that. I’m OK donating all the gas we use in the truck, but I have issues when we start to fill up other vehicles besides ours. Robert agrees, and will probably tell President Bonito we need to be reimbursed for the gas for the van.

They got to the swimming pool early and the management wouldn’t let them in the pool until 7:00, so the boys begged to go to McDonald’s for the dollar menu. Most of them had money, but Robert gave a couple of them a dollar, and of course had to buy Ricky’s dinner. The swimming activity went well and they made it back home without incident.
