FAMOUS PERSONALITY INTERVIEWED ON LOCAL RADIO STATION


At 9:30 this morning Mike Lupe, who is actually Maxine Bonito’s father, and the tribal representative for Cibecue, called and asked Robert if he would talk on the radio at 12:30 today. That’s what we love about being here. The preparation time we get for everything. It was too good an opportunity to pass up, so we hurried and finished our cleaning, then headed for Whiteriver, even though the last place we wanted to be today was back in the truck. On the way over Robert made a few notes. He thought it would be an interview, but before we left Mike came by and said Robert would just have 30 minutes to talk about whatever he wanted. Thirty minutes with no preparation! Now there’s a challenge.

I’m proud to say Robert was up to it. He talked the whole time and was great. He talked about our assignment, and scouts and Relief Society, the addiction recovery program and families. It was really great. He ended by reading the Proclamation on the Family. The program went on for another half hour, and Mike told people they could call and ask questions. There were a couple. It wasn’t live telephone. The secretary took calls and wrote the questions on a paper. One question was about gambling and the other was whether or not Robert thinks that living together without being married is a sin. Duh! He answered both very well. He was tactful, but certainly didn’t avoid saying that having sexual relations without benefit of marriage is not God’s way. He also said that gambling can be an addiction and any time we’re trying to get something for nothing we’re probably going to be disappointed.

As we left the station Maxine called and said she’d heard him and he did good. Wow! That’s the most feedback we’ve ever gotten out here.

What an experience! It will be interesting to see if anyone else mentions it.

Obviously we didn’t do any piano, as we were in Whiteriver most of the afternoon. Casper came for his reading lesson and tonight is scouts. Whenever we come back after being gone we feel that we just hit the ground running.
