January 19 and 20, 2007
Yesterday we went to Snowflake for our Family Services staff meeting. It snowed and this was the first day the road out of Cibecue was snow covered. We nearly died, really! We came around a corner and a car had gone off the road. Not unusual in a snowstorm. The unusual part was that several cars, having stopped to assist, were parked every which way on the road including one that was literally stopped right in the middle of the road. Thanks goodness for our 4-wheel drive or we probably would have been sharing the front end of the truck with the vehicle in the middle of the road. It was like Dodge’em at Lagoon threading between all those cars. The fact that we survived is a testimony to Robert’s good driving skills and the presence of a few guardian angels. The guardian angels have undoubtedly requested a new assignment.
We really like this meeting, probably because they buy our lunch at Eva’s every month. Actually, the training is also very good. There were 7 couples there from the Arizona-Tempe mission, the Arizona-Mesa mission and the New Mexico mission. Ken Brown talked about cultural issues that we encounter and how to respond. It was helpful. Then we had time to ask questions and hear what concerns others have. The couples on the Navajo reservation are right in the middle of the desert. They said they like to come to Snowflake because they get to see trees. They also said the wind blows constantly out there and that if they leave a window open even a crack the room is literally filled with sand when they come home. We left feeling pretty happy about being assigned to Cibecue.
We started and ended the day at Wal-Mart. Stopped this morning and bought some things then went back with Rosie and Steve after the meeting. Rosie helped me buy some material to use for quilting.
This morning we had planned to go to Globe and meet Sharon and Ray for lunch, but last night we came home in a snowstorm and it snowed all night. We had 4 inches on the truck by morning and it snowed pretty much all day. Robert spent all morning shoveling snow then we went to Keegan’s birthday party this afternoon. We were disappointed that we couldn’t see Sharon and Ray.
Despite the rumors, I don't live here anymore

Some great stuff in those logs. I love the part about the new elder's initiation being at the friendly demon's exorcism. I'm glad the family changed their minds--you don't meet a lot of nonthreatening phantasms. Also, the mission president showed real inspiration in allowing the scouts to live to see their next birthdays. Having just recently been a cub scout leader, I know the temptation for murder can be overwhelming. And I'm glad you could meet with the couple who lost the baby. That's such a hard thing to deal with.
Ethan had a great birthday yesterday. Thanks for calling him. He felt special all day. Although Uncle Shawn kept wishing him Happy Valentine's Day. Those crazy uncles!
